Someone on here posted a stupid meme insinuating people protesting are just your typical liberals looking for more government intervention. As a gun owning, meat eating, desert dwelling independent, I can assure you that isn’t the case. We need to light a fire under this whole system, screw political sensibilities. I have close friends of all political persuasions, and even my liberal friends are pointing out that as far as police brutality is concerned, it doesn’t really matter if you live in a “blue” city.

Good read. TBH, the vast majority of violence seems to be coming from police at this point. I’m witnessing huge protests in Phoenix, and the only dust ups we’ve had were when the cops went rogue Monday night. Since then it has been great, and people here have plenty to be angry about. I believe our PD led the nation in police shootings last year, and we have some famous cases of cops threatening to kill mothers.

Things are starting to get out of control in Jalisco too. I don’t think we will see more protests in Mexico City but it’s just a fact that police here are violent, and most times associated with organized crime. I hope we implement some reforms but I don’t think that will happen in my lifetime.

If you're not banning police unions you're part of the problem

The problem isn’t red or blue, indeed.  It is an untouchable union, and the “fraternity” culture where the good guys protect the bad guys.

Yes. Abolished. The people authorized to use force should not collectively bargaining with the population subject to that force.

What do police unions do in America?

The exception to that point is that a lot of Republicans patently support the police (generally) as a cover for explicit racism . I’m from St Louis and here we witnessed first hand the escalation that a heavily militarized and violent police force causes.

The p violence only stopped when the national guard was deployed. In the example of Ferguson 2014 the protesters finally felt safe as the guardsmen were not going to shoot at them unless seriously provoked.

It feels like we were the birth of the ‘blue lives matter’ movement which is shameful but the number of flags with a blue line through them next to a Confederate battle flag sickens me on a daily basis. Here the racism is blatant and barely hidden. The response to every instance of cop violence here has been ‘he deserved it or wors e’.

There are major fundamental changes that need to be made in regards to how we police, but there are large swaths of America that are happy with how it is run today and that’s a huge problem.

wouldn’t it be better to restructure them? Unions are very tricky to balance out, but ultimately not having unions also hurts workers. I know police in America don’t need more protections... but like any other worker they need some protection. Unions could be active in bringing in positive, progressive change rather than repressing it like they do now... but they need to have a healthy structure.

They could organize as a guild. Employment contracts should be created with legislation, using public debate and subject to change with future legislation.

So, police officers should be contractors as opposed to employees?

It’s not about red vs. blue because they both support the system. I think you mentioned A People’s History of the United States a while back...I remember Zinn explaining how the elites deliberately ginned up racism among the white indentured servants and working poor against black slaves to prevent a unified working class. It’s about rich vs. poor, always was.

I don’t even think we have police unions here in the suburbs. Georgia said “unions suck” a long time ago, and we’ve been doing pretty well.

I would almost guarentee you that your local police are unionized. I live in Arizona, and our police are all unionized. One of the biggest police unions, the IUPA, is headquartered in Florida, which is also a “unions suck ” state. The Police Officers Association of Georgia and the Police Benevolent Association of Georgia have chapters all over your state.

Nowhere in the US has been doing “pretty well” when it comes to policing. Some have done “relatively well”.

I’m generally a fan of unions and lament their destruction, usually at the hands of Republican politicians working in concert with business interests.

Police unions are different. They’re not only bargaining for better labor terms for their members, they generally protect at all costs any officer accused of misconduct, file grievances and appeals, and have made it such that almost half of all officers removed from their jobs for misconduct wind up getting reinstated based on bullshit technicalities. They also lobby for increased spending on departments in general and for procurement of military style weapons and equipment that police departments simply do not need. They also often resist political efforts to institute police reform.

Personally I think it would be easier to institute reforms through federal legislation than it would be to get rid of police unions. But the only way such legislation is likely to pass is if there's a big red to blue flip in November.

Yep.  You saw similar tactics with the Wobblies in order to disrupt the labor movement and make it more favorable for large businesses.

Of course, police unions are very toxic... Switching to a legislative structure would probably easen  reform and benefit everyone.

From my extremely limited knowledge it makes it incredibly difficult to punish/reprimand officers for misdeeds. From my understanding until an officer has been found guilty in court, the union will refuse to allow the PD to punish that officer. That’s why you have things like officers on paid leave after being caught on video doing something heinous.

Oppos with more knowledge about this please correct me!
